Firstly, early this year I had a chance to work in Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited as known as CP or CPF. Second thing is that, just last week, I went to help out with the AUITC Computer Competition. I have some pictures to show and some thoughts to share.

For this entry, I would like to share my experience of working in CP. Last year, I applied to CP with the hope that I would get to work abroad, specifically India. I thought that going abroad would give me good experience and earn good money along the way. I would be working in Bangkok Produce, one of the subidiaries of CP. The position that I applied to was a 'trader' buying produces to make livestocks feed. There were many materials that I had to be responsible for but the most important one was corn. However, I got to learn other produces along the way as well like casava and rice.

In my batch, there were two other people, Keng and Mee, training with me. Keng would be going to India and Mee would be going to Burma. For the first month, we would get to train together and go around Northeastern and Central Thailand to see the plantations and CP factories.

Keng and Mee in the bus on the way to Korat.

Quotation of the Moment 8

"Some men see things as they are and say why - I dream things that never were and say why not."
George Bernard Shaw

Bangkok International Film Festival 2006

Last month, I had a chance to help out Pisal Setthawong in the Bangkok International Film Festival 2006. Thailand had the hornor to host this event with 11 countries (depending on how you count them) participated and those countries are: Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, and Thailand. For me, I had the chance to be part of the event being on of the MCs...little did I know that I was getting myself into something that I would not forget for the rest of my life. Ok, I think I exaggerated this part a bit too much but the event was definitely a memorable experience for me.

A little bit of background about the competition, the competition was divided into three levels: primary school, middle school, and high school. These students would have to make robot from Lego Challenge Set and program their robots to do certain tasks. For the primary level, their robot would have to trace a track in the Pretzel Puzzle, which was an infiniti curve track. They also had a showdown in a Tug-of-War battle. For the middle school and high school levels, their robots had to trace track in the Bangkok Traffic and the Hockey Practice. The Bangkok Traffic was the time-racing along the intersection lines from one side to another side. The Hockey practice was like a mouse in a maze going from one side and trying to make their ways to another side. Here we go again, I don't think I'm doing a good job in explaining about the competitions so if you would like to know more, please visit http://www.wroboto.org.

Once again, as part of my photos journal or I should say my photos blog, I'll take you the event through my camera lens.

The first day, the competitors arrived at Royal Benja Hotle at Nana. I thought that the area wasn't appropriate for this kind of event where there are a lot of children participated but oh well...I can't do anything. I went to the lobby of the hotel and saw the Filippino contingent checking into the hotel.

At the Lobby seeing the Filippino contingenet.

After that, I went to the 14th floor of the parking lot building to see the practice in the function hall. I saw competitors were preparing their robots with very intense atmosphere and then I realized that there were here not just to compete but to win as well.

Competitors were busy practicing here.

After the practice session, I went to have dinner and there was a briefing afterward. Before the dinner, Chang, Anne, and I met together for the evening checking out the atmosphere of the event. Along the way, we got to meet a few competitors and had a little conversation with them. There were very nice and we had quite interesting conversations. We got to talk to the teams from Thailand, St.Gabriel's High School, Assumption High School, teams from Phuket, and teams from Taiwan and the Philippines.

MC Anne and a roboteer from taiwan.

While I was going to the briefing room, I saw practice cicuits outside the room. The coaches went inside to listen to any changes or final adjustments in the rules but the competitors stayed outside to practice.

Teams from Taiwan and Malaysia practicing on the Pretzle Puzzle race track.

Another picture of the Taiwan team (I think...) practicing.

The atmosphere in the briefing room was quite intense as many teams and coaches questioning A.Peerawat about the competition.

Quite intense atmosphere in the briefing room.

So, I came out for a further look at the teams preparing their robots.

The Russians.

I must say that I admired the Russian contingent because they were very nice and one of their roboteers was deaf. We also had the chance to meet Krit and his team from Phuket. Krit and one of his friends will be in King Mongkut Institute of Technology Thonburi (KMIT Bangmod) next year. Maybe he'll take MC Chang's class at Bangmod some days.

Krit from Phuket and MC Chang talking about robot.

In this event, one of my cousins, Din, from Assumption High School Sumrong, was one of the competitors representing Thailand. I went to ABAC for my master degree interview with the MSIT department. I had my interview with Arjarn Thossaphol. He was very nice and we had interesting conversation that didn't last very long. I thought the interview was so short that I wasn't and still am not quite sure that I will get in the master degree or not. He asked me two questions and the question number one was why do I want to study IT and then after I finished answering that question he asked me if I had any question to ask him. Interestingly, his first question actually got me to think about what I really want to do in the future...basically about how to live my life. I think an education in the field of science and engineering will get you very far in life. However, if you don't like it, you can always switch to business anytime. That's how I perceive it and I'm not quite sure if other people share my view or not. The reason that I choose IT is because I want to be the person who links the business and the technical aspects together. I can see the need in business to upgrade themselves to stay competitive in the ever evolving economy. Also, that my skills in English and communication will enable me to do my job effectively. Having say all of those, I must get a master degree first. So Master Degree...Here I come!!!

Moving Along in Life!!!

It's been a while since my last posting but not that many things have happended since then. Basically, I have no excuse for not putting stuffs up in my blog except that I don't have my camera with me but that's beside the point. As many of you know, I prefer photo jounal than just plain writing entries.

Anyhow, a few updates on what has been going on in my life...my quest in becoming a pilot was unsuccessful. I didn't make it pass the interview. I went back to reflect on reasons why I failed the interview and I must say that it gave me quite a few tough lessons for my future and for my life in general. I have to learn it the hard way. So, what else has been happening in my life....I've been buming out lately but I'm trying to get myself back together for my next endeavor. Not being able to be a pilot isn't the end of my life, I can't let myself feel depress for it. Next week, I'm going to apply for an air traffic controller position at the AeroThai. Let's see how it goes so moving right along in life for me...

Thursday Badminton

For the past few weeks, I had been trying to get myself in shape for the Thai Airways physical examination. For those of you who don't know, I'd applied to Thai Airways student pilot program and I passed the written exam but still many more tests to go. So, I wanted to get back in shape by going for running at Suan Lum and playing badminton on Thursday in ABAC Bangna. I've been playing badminton with many friends from the badminton club and former badminton athletes. Some of you might wonder why do I have to go all the way to ABAC Bangna for the badminton. The answer is quite simple and that is I have friends playing badminton there. It's better to have sport sessions with known friends and people rather than going to a place where I don't know the people and enjoy the activities with them. Here are some of the photos of the Thursday badminton.

Joe and Julian taking a break after a game.

The University Athletes practicing.

Another view of them practing.

Joe and Julian having a look at the athletes practicing while they were taking a break.

The girl athletes were practicing in the next court.

N'Gift and N'Jib taking a break in between sessions.

After watching people playing badminton for a while, I went to play with Deer and his friends.

Deer and his friends coming for Thursday badminton.

Obb and Arjan Jong enjoying the break...notice Arjan's pink shoes!!!

Gift and Nuy always have time for a photo during a game of badminton.

Nuy with a quick pose for a photo.

N'Jib streaching for a warm down after the practice.

Julian finishing up a badminton session with a streach.

After thought...I think constant exercise is a must for all of us. I can see a lot of people getting fat after they start working, which I can understand why. When people are busy working, it's very easy for them not to keep up the exercise and thus their health deteriorate. I have noticed this problme in many adults who are so busy working. When they became sick and went to see a doctor, the doctor said that they have high blood pressure and stress from works. The doctor told them to go exercise, get more rest, and eat health food. I think it's a common sense that we all know the problmes from lack of exercise, sleep, and not eating healthy food. However, who can keep up those things in the current society where there are a lot of demands placing on each one of us. I can see myself going down the unhealthy path that this society will take me.

A Friend's Success

I would like to congratulate my friend, Emma Masterson, for completing her Master Degree in European Studies from Chulalongkorn University with High Honor. I have known her for quite sometimes and I can truely say that she's one of the most remarkable persons I have ever met. I'm sure her future will be bright and even more success than the present time. It has been a long tradition for Assumption University to have activities for them. The event was organized by the Student Organization in conjunction with many activities units such as the faculties committees, HAM Club, and IT Center. The event can be divided into two parts: the day time and the night time. During the day time, in King's Lawn, there were cheers and performance from ten schools to show the unity among them. For the night time, there were concerts, more performance and shows on the stage in front of the Coronation Hall. The highlight for the shows on stage cannot be other than the Prince and Princess contest. This year, there were many smart and brilliant candidates represent each school.

I went to the Freshy 2005 to walk around and to capture the atmosphere of the event. This time, insteading of using my usual Sony Cybershot P10, I had to borrow the camera from my cousin. The camera that I used this time was Nikon Coolpix 5200.

I started out my day by taking a van from See Phraya Pier to the university. I went to hang out at the lobby of the E-Building, Engineering Side, to try out my new D-Link DWL-G650+ Wi-Fi card. Then I went around for a walk to look at the event.

The Day Time Event from back stage with cheers and performance from 10 schools.

A look around at the entrance.

Back stage staff, N'Name and N'Pook, standing and enjoying the shows.

After a look around from the back stage, I went out to have a look from the entrance at the circle in front of the Student Organization building.

Oil and Popcorn enjoying the light evening.

Crowds walking in and out from the circle.

A view of the booths along the AU fence.

Arjan Vee and Arjan Sakorn keeping students in check.

After walking around checking out the atmosphere of the day time event, then it was time for a dinner. Notice MC Fern holding the microphone talking and taking photo at the same time.

Four MCs together on the stage for one final announcement before the finale.

The finale this year were Toh, B5, and the Monotone.

After thoughts...It's always good to see people happy and enjoy themselves in any occasion. However, I would like to remind all freshmen that the midterm exams are coming fast and they should start studying for them already. Also, time does fly fast and the freshmen will no longer be the younglings. Experience in college hopefully will be memorable and fruitful one for all of them. Another thought that I would like to share here is that I had a chance to talk to Arjans in the Sala Thai while we were watching the shows on the stage. One of the topics that came up in the my conversation with Arjan Chukiat was about the price of oil. A. Chukiat mentioned that all of us are complaining about the price of the oil now but this not the end of it. The future market price for the oil has reached 80 dollars per barrel and the price for oil in Thailand can reach 50 Baht per liter. I wasn't sure about his comment whether it was true until today I watched Channel 9 News Analysis. The news analysis actually confirmed A.Chukiat statement. I think the energy crisis in Thailand will not be long. We, all, should be prepared for it.

Back to Blogging...

After a long while way from writing anything online, now I'm coming back to put more thoughts and updates on my life. Before going further, I should clarify a few reasons why I have been away from this blog for so long. Well...I got a job a few months ago and that took a bit of time from my own life. It wasn't that the job was a time consuming one, but rather the long commuting that I had to make which made me very tired from doing other things. Another way to rephrase that statement would be that I was too tired and lazy to do other things. The second reason was that I had nothing to write. My writing comes from my inspirations to express my thoughts about certain things which I couldn't find them during the past few months. Finally, as some of you probably have noticed, I really like to put photos in my blog. I prefer photo jounals than just plain text journal. Well...I simply didn't have the camera with me since I gave it to my dad to use for his works. I'm going to go get my camera and get myself back to writing my blog again.

Quotation of the Moment 6

"We can't solve problems using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."
Albert Einstein

Long Holidays

In the spirit of the long holidays that we're going to have, I would like to wish eveyone safe and sound for this year Songkran in every trip that all my friends will take.

Don't get too wet and drive safely eveyone :)

Debating Part I

In the light of latest endeavor of Assumption International English Debate Club in the last tournament in Thammasat University, I would like to share a poem that I wrote about debate long time ago with eveyone. The Thammasat English Speakers Union along with the TU British American Studies Program co-hosted the EU-TU Inter-Varsity Debating Tournament under the theme "Thailand Talking." There were 18 teams from 5 universities: Chulalongkorn University 4 teams, Thammasat University 4 teams, Mahidol University International College 3 teams, Kasesart University 1 team, and Assumption University 6 teams.

Our team enjoying ourselves...

Here is the roster of the AU contingent in the tournament: ABAC 1: Tarique, Alan, and Betty, ABAC 2: Pook, Leo, and TJ, ABAC 3: Ziad, Vipul, and Ankush, ABAC 4: Dianna, Lili, and Fern, ABAC 5: Vinod, Sara, and Purnima, ABAC 6: Kate, Tee, and Shou and adjudicators are: Ravi, Rut, Linh, Harry, Sunny, and Sylvia.

We always have time for a photo...

We had stayed in TJ's house to prepare for the tournament. Our collective efforts have enabled us to have strong performance in the tournament with successful results of our teams. Here is the break ranking after 4 preliminary rounds: 1) MUIC 1, 2) TU1 , 3) ABAC 2, 4) MUIC 2, 5) MUIC 3, 6) CU 1, 7) ABAC 1, 8) ABAC 6, and 9) CU 2. As you can see, out of top 8 teams, 3 teams were from AU. It is also notable that the outstanding performance of our team 6 finishing 8th place in the tournament. ABAC 6 would have broken into quater-finals but unfortunately they weren't designated as breaking team (only team 1-3 of each institution could break). Our team 2 also did very well in the prelims by finishing 3rd and by beating MUIC 2, who eventually won the tournament. Our team 1 put forth the strongest performance in the tournament reaching the semi-final. Further more, I would like to congratulate TJ, Tarique, and Leo who received top 10 speakers awards.

Intense discussions and preparations before the tournament...

Final after thoughts, many of our debaters in the club have learnt and improved from this tournament. I hope that everyone would stay with the club so that we can develop new generations of debaters and adjudicators to propel the club forward and somedays AI will bring back the championship trophy home. Now that the tournament is over, let the practice begins once again for the next tournament.

Quotation of the Moment 5

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
Albert Einstein

The Road to Financial Discipline

I just want to share my idea of saving money. If you all remember when we were kids, our parents have taught us to save money. They gave us many reasons why we should save up...money is difficult to find, saving up for future usage, etc., etc. Now that we have grown up, reasons for saving money are still the same but with more mature underlying principles. One of the principles that I always look at when I think about saving is financial discipline. We just can't use money in whichever way we please. It's not easy to earn money and we don't know what is going to happen in our lives. We might get sick or get into accidents and there are so many things in life that we have to use money. One of the concepts, that I haven't get used to, requires money is "social tax." Social tax refers to many occasions that we have to give money as gifts. It doesn't really matter how much we give but small amounts do add up. Now, that I have to start earning money myself, I begin to start counting every penny that I have. Then again, I haven't really moved on to living on my own just yet so I have to start saving and getting used to the concept of not spending money more than I have to.

Here is a way that I save my money...it's nothing impressive...it's not even my idea. I got this idea from friends that, hopefully, one day, will lead me to do other better things. I start saving by collecting 10-Baht coins that I have at the end of each day. Everyday that I got out, if I have 10-Baht coins, I would try not to spend it. Hoever, if I have to use it, then I would. At the end of each day, I would drop those left over coins in my bottle. I was going to buy a nice piggy bank for my saving but I thought if I were to buy a nice one, it would cost a lot and then that would undermine the concept of saving that I try to promote in the first place. With that in mind, left over drinking water bottle will be suffice for my piggy bank.

I hope that, by starting out small, I can get into the habit of saving that will enable me to go for other things in the future. This is a small step for me in the road to financial discipline.

My piggy bank

Finding the Right One

In the spirit of the Valentine's Day, I would like to share a poem that I wrote ages ago :)

Finding The Right One…

When I think of this topic
I feel like my heart got picked
So I go deeper into the midst
To search for something I hope that would exist

If she is out there somewhere
I know that I have to be prepared
Finding the right one
I hope it would be fun

Maybe fun is not the way to see
Inspiration is the word to be
Yes, Inspiration that is
That is how I would describe this

I’m in search of my inspiration that will be my light
That would make my soul delight
Finding one hasn’t come near
That’s the thing I stop wanting to hear

Maybe I should take it slow
But I don’t want to get hit with a blow
I always tell myself
That things are fine and I couldn’t help

Why am I writing this poem?
Because I want to find the right one of my own

Rut C.

Chinese New Year 2005

The year of the Rooster is here!!! It wansn't long ago that I remember the time of getting red envelops, eating boiled chicken, and the Yaowarat Street being closed to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Now that the whole entire year had passed and we're celebrating to welcome the up coming new year, I've had the chance to walk along the Yaowarat Road to see what they have for this year celebrations.

The general atmosphere of this year celebration was similar to that of last year. However, they had expanded the closing of streets and increased the number of stages.

General Atmosphere of the Yaowarat Road...Very Busy

The main attraction was still at the Odian Roundabout with many performances throughout the day. The theme of this year performance was more of cultural exchange between the Chinese and the Thai that would continue two countries relationships.

Dragon Performance at the Odian Circle

The same Dragon on the Street

The Chinese New Year Celebration also celebrated the 50th birthday anniversary of our beloved HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhon. She came to the celebration in Yaowarat area to strengthen and reaffirm the relationship between the Chinese Thais and the Thais.

Closing of the Road in Preparation for HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn

Definitely the celebration would not be completed without fireworks.

The Fireworks on Yaowarat Street

Another well known attractions for Yaowarat are food stalls along the street. Yaowarat is famous for food at night. Nevertheless, I wasn't too excited for food stalls since I live around this area and see them everyday.

Street Food Stalls

My Friend, Joke, and his food

Final Note: I think Chinese immigrants have taken such a deep root in Thailand but still haven't forgoten their past, cultures, and heritage. With new generations surface, the tradition will definitely fade away through time. It's certainly sad to see that happens since the Chinese immigrants have been assimilated very well into Thai cultures. I, myself, is the third generation Chinese in Thailand who doesn't do much to help preserve my Chinese backgrounds. With my international backgrounds, I have some excuses why not being truly connected with my roots. At the end of this blog, I can say that no single individual can define the term internationalizations...it comes with experinece.

Quotation of the Moment 4

"Imagination is more important than knowledge"
Albert Einstein

Congratulations to the AU Team

Over the weekend, the AU Team was the finalist in the 5th Inter-Varsity Environmental Debating Championship. They have exhibited great deal of talents and defnitely have proven themselves to be great debaters. They have gone beyond my expectation and reminded me of the saying that the new waves will be stronger than the old ones. I would like to congratulate Pook, Fern, Opal, and TJ for such a wonderful tournament. I also would like to congratulate the champion, Thammasat Team, Amp, Billy, Afong, and Praew, for their success in the tournament.

<a Upon all stories in my memories and numerous faces of my friends flashing back, one frightening thought came up from nowhere. That thought was "do I really have to leave all of these experiences behind me and move on to something else in my life?" I guess the answer to that question is clear and can be no other than "yes, i do have to." Nevertheless, I'm going to miss all the good times and will learn from all the bad times. In a way, this university has given me more than just lessons inside the classrooms...the sense of reponsiblities that often not sought after by many. This week was a photo session in Bangna Campus and next Saturday will be graduation ceremony.

I believe that there are more to college life than just going to classes. Classes are essential to knowledge and skills that needed for the future career but outside classroom activites can make you a more complete person. I've had many chances to meet many people from my own university, other universites, and many other different places through various events. I will miss my student life and all the good times I had very much. I would like to thank my father, my mom, my brother, my aunts, my cousins, my grandmother, and everyone in my family for their supports. I also would like to thank all teachers for lessons, advice, and guidance. I would like to further thank every single one of my friend for being such good friends to me.

Real life lies ahead and it's time for me to take another first step into Everytime when I look upto it, it makes me think "how can they build such a thing?" The integration of different fields of knowledge and thousands of man hours can make it happens. Over the new year, I had a chance to visit Kuala Lumpur, the home of the tallest building, the Petronas Towers. The twin towers were the tallest buildings until recently was surpassed by the Teipei 101. Nevertheless, the Petronas reminded me of my childhood fascinations with the great structures. Here are some data of the Petronas: 452 meters (1483 feet), 88 stories, and 32,000 windows!!!

Quotation of the Moment

"The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted; it belongs to the brave."
Ronald Reagan: The Space Shuttle "Challenger" Tragedy Address

It seems like everyone is sharing some feelings online so I might as well as keep myself upto date by starting a blog of my own.
